Fun Turns to Tragedy!!!

The Skinny

I am a gun enthusiast trapped in the People's Republic of Maryland. My political affiliation is Independent, as the Ruling parties are both full of crap, and long ago stopped representing the common man. If the Libertarians weren't such freaks I would probably be one. I am a member of the Nation of Riflemen and damn proud of it. I once took an oath that I would support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. As far as I know I never broke that oath, and will continue to follow it. I am not Politically Correct and will NEVER be Politically Correct. If you need to know more, feel free, Ask.

what am I up too???

Back in the USSA

Well I am back in the good old USSA.

24 or so hours to get home as I had to sit in JFK for 4 hours as they would not let me on the first flight back to baltimore.  I got into JFK 2 hours before the first flight to baltimore left.  My bags made it onto the flight but i could not get on the flight…

I can do a few posts on where and what I was doing now that the King has come to the site and gone so there are no security issues left in the way.

Construction FAIL

Well, Seems that some people do not comprehend the load limits on a crane…

image

This happened about 3 days ago.

I guess they are scratching their heads still about how to get it down…

Oh here is another shot for perspective.

Bullet report

Well before I unassed the good old US of Fricking A on the 8th I got my 200 grain SWC bullets from Dardas Cast Bullets.

I had enough time to load them up and run a hundred or so through my Kimber.

I loaded them up with 4.8 grains of tightgroup and they were a little stout.  I was doing some reading around the web and people were saying that 4.5 grains was making power factor for IDPA so I will load them to 4.5 grains when I get home.

Now on to the range performace.  Unlike the Rainier bullets that I could not keep inside of a 6 inch circle, the 200 grain SWC made one nice big hole with a flyer.  So it looks like I will be sticking with these for the foreseeable future.

The only down side is that they are a bit smokey but as I understand things, you get that with any lead bullets…

I ordered another 1000 bullets before I left the states.  So I should have 1400 of those little beauties waiting when I get home as they are running about a month on filling orders.

I can get a 1000 for half of the cost of Montana Gold bullets so I will be shooting these as long as I don’t have any serious leading issues.

Morning View

Well this is the view out of my home away from home…

image

Someone important (at least they think so) seems to be in town.  This means that there are lots of soldiers securing the streets.  They seem to have a lot of M16A2 rifles as well as M4 carbines, don’t know what they are going to do with them with no magazines.  Oh and their HUMMERs have .50 cal Machine guns on the roof but no ammo boxes or belts hanging out of them.  All show, no go.

Traffic is interesting so far also.

Unmitigated Disaster

Ugh…  Today’s range day was major suckage.  I undoubtedly was DFL among everyone, my ammo had tons of feeding problems.

Thing is that yesterday when I hit the range to work on springs in the gun.  It was running the factory 16 pound spring which was just too much for the 168 Power Factor ammo that I shoot in the gun.  Basically the slide when going forward was slamming the barrel down, which caused me to have to lift the barrel for follow up shots.  So I resprung it, so it is now neutral and I am not seeing any signs of battering on the frame or slide.  I had no feeding problems when I was doing my testing.

So this morning I took my freshly loaded ammo, I had just switched to tightgroup powder, but I loaded Rainier plated bullets as that was all I have left.  Well my gun seems to hate, err HATE the Rainier plated 185 grain flat point bullets.  They catch on the bottom of the barrel which is sharp.  The plating is then compromised by the sharp bottom of the barrel.  Once the plating splits on the edge of the barrel the bullet jams the gun so that you have to remove the magazine, clear the bullet and reseat.

This takes time and it breaks your concentration so half the time when you look back up you have lost your place in the stage and with limited vickers you are screwed.  The jams were so prevalent I did not even bother staying for the second go round of the match,  why bother getting in more practice when you would spend half the time clearing jams.

So no more Rainier bullets for me.  Montana Gold or hard cast lead if that stuff feeds in my gun.

Bill that should really become Law

H. R. 450 - Enumerated Powers Act

Each Act of Congress shall contain a concise and definite statement of the constitutional authority relied upon for the enactment of each portion of that Act. The failure to comply with this section shall give rise to a point of order in either House of Congress. The availability of this point of order does not affect any other available relief.

Will never become law.  But it should have been in the Constitution from day one…

Reloading Component Shortage

Well most reloaders and even avid shooters know that there is a severe shortage of ammunition and components to make your own ammo.  I am having my own shortage right now.  I fact I just loaded up the last 500 primers that I had tonight.  I am also down to around 100 rounds worth of HP38 powder.

Not too concerned about the powder as I planed on switching to Tightgroup after the HP38 ran out.  Powder is one of the components that you can easily find, well usually as Kevin at Smallest Minority just had an issue finding Varget.  I called up Powder Valley today and had the ship me the Tightgroup on my order.  Only I had to switch from the 4 pound keg to the 8 pound keg as they were out of stock on the 4 pound kegs.  8 pounds should load around 10,000 rounds at my current powder usage levels.  I still have a standing order with them for the Primers.

But Cabela’s has come through on my primers.  I got my shipping notice today and my 4,000 large pistol primers are currently in the brown truck’s system,  Somewhere in Illinois.  Scheduled to hit my door on Tax day,  Yea…

Now I just have to wait for my hard cast lead bullets to show up.  I still have 500 or so Rainier bullets to use up in the mean time.

After I shoot some of the lead bullets it will be decision time on which bullets to keep using Montana Gold Bullets or switch to hard cast lead.

Accuracy and Price will be the final decision points.  If the hard cast lead is significantly better than the rainier bullets and equal or better than the Montana Gold I will be switching to Lead.  Plus lead makes the environmental weenies cry, so that almost makes it a no brainer…

Cold, Wet, and Muddy

Slipery, Wet, Cold hands.  All the good training you could ask for.

Got to the range at 8:45 and helped set up, which mostly consisted of putting new targets up on the stages that were set up from Fridays shoot.  This match went much better.  only one procedural and that was because the slid locked back on a mag with a couple rounds left in it and i dumped it thinking it was a slide lock reload.  My times were OK.  my accuracy was good except for one target with no rounds on it (unless I just forgot to shoot it).  My hands were freezing so I had a couple of slow reloads just due to not being able to get the slide stop to drop easily.  My moves were slow because I did not wish to bust my butt in the mud.

I did get to shoot all of the stages (two guys did not because of a hard time cut off at 1PM due to noise abatement).

Pasters suck in the rain.  You just can’t get them off of the backing paper if they are wet.  The wet T-Shirt contest on the targets suck because it knocks down the heads when you sling a wet T-Shirt over the top of the targets.  Other than that it was great range time.

Now I just have to wait to see how I did against the competition.

Bloggers I miss

Well I have been posting on my little corner of the interwebs for a long time now.  I started some time in 02, had a big problem with a service provider or two and lost the early years.  I go in starts and fits but keep coming back.  A lot of blogs I read have come and gone.

Of all of those I really only find that I miss one.  Kim DuToit is the only blogger that I really miss reading.  I have met a few fellow bloggers in my time, and he is the one that stands out.  Many people on the web have taken umbrage to some of the things that he posted on occasion, even me once or twice.  Kim never backed down when he was right and had the stones to apologize when he was wrong, a rare thing on the interwebs as everyone is a Ninja behind the anonymity of the keyboard and monitor.  Kim was true to himself and his Ideals, not an easy feat in todays world.

He suffered greatly for voicing his opinions as a blogger that blogged using his true name.  Loss of Jobs, loss of job prospects in the corporate world, but he kept blogging and did not let that silence him as others have done.

Kim said he was done.  Many bloggers that said that have come back, I am not sure that Kim will do so but I sure wish he would as now more than ever we need a loud vocal voice against the nanny and socialist state that America is becoming.

Kim, you are missed.

Primer shortage of 2009

Well, I am down to 500 large pistol primers.  I have been shooting around 300 rounds a week and have 550 loaded rounds left at the moment.  I am guessing that I will have to stop the live fire practice for a bit until I can score some primers.

I have an order in at Powder Valley but when I called them yesterday they stated that the only manufacture that gives them lead times pushed it out till mid May.  Match this weekend, big matches next weekend.

I may have gotten lucky as one of the guys on the 1911 forum said that he had gotten a shipment notice from Cabela’s on the 8th.  So I hit their web site and sure enough they had Remington Large Pistol primers, and only large pistol primers no other primers in stock from any vendor.  I immediately ordered 4K in primers, now I am just waiting on a shipped notice.

So hopefully I will get a notice before I have to stop practicing as I see myself going through 500 rounds in the next couple of weeks.  Will have to order bullets pretty soon also.
