Well it has been a wile since I have posted. Been a bit busy with work and being sick and being in the hospital. So were to start, well lets just go back a few weeks and see where we end up.
Well My father and I made a pretty big dent in the basement bathroom. We did all of the plumbing and electrical work. All that is left is to clean up a bit, take a bunch of pictures and put in some insulation, and put up the drywall. Of course then we have to install the shower and tile the floor and and and… But at least all of the hard work is done.
On a lighter note we were able to test the ground fault interrupt circuits that were installed in the bathroom. How did we test this you ask, well my dad decided that turning off the shop vacuum with the switch was just so old school. Dad decided that he would take a crack at turning off the vacuum with the compound miter saw. Made for some nice sparks and then all the lights in the new bathroom went off. Those pesky power cords don’t ya know… But on the bright side those new circuits and power outlets worked as advertised.
Well when my parents were here my pesky intestinal problems came back again. The problem stayed for a couple of days and then came back the next weekend. Well it stayed this time and by Wednesday I was in a bit of pain. After a consult with my doctor it was time for a trip to the ER. Well got there at ten thirty, got my initial vitals taken and then sat in the waiting room until one. Got back in the ER and seen by a doctor an hour or so later. Well the doctor gave me a checkup thumped my tummy and snapped on the GLOVE… After the GLOVE I was sent to get a CAT scan, well for once I got a scan while the problem was going on and low and behold I have Diverticulosis. My father had it when he was about my age so I knew a bit about it. It looks like we have caught it in time to be treated with antibiotics since I do not want to go the Elvis route.
Well they admitted me at about 10:30 pm. I got a nice little sign above my bed saying “nothing by mouth” in the center and on the 4 corners “No Smoking”, “No Gum”, “No Candy”, “No Lifesavers”. The injustice NO LIFESAVERS, well somehow I survived not having Lifesavers for years and now I was not allowed…
I did get some very nice pain killers through my IV, let me tell you getting the pain killers through the IV beats pills any day. You can feel the pain killer going from your head to your toes. Kind of weird and kind of cool and FAST bam no pain.
Did I mention that I have did not eat anything since Tuesday at one pm. Now that will do wonders for the diet. I have lost around ten pounds since I started to try and loose weight. I am sure that I probably lost at least another five in the hospital living off an IV for three days. I was able to get on a liquid diet today and got some nice broth and jello. I can resume regular eating tomorrow but it must be a fiber restricted diet until mid June. I am having to take two different kinds of antibiotics every day for ten days. Once I get through all of the antibiotics I will have to go back to the doctor and get the flashlight of doom…
Well that is it for tonight. I plan on finishing the speaker stands this weekend since I have a few days off.
Ok my server was upgraded over the weekend. I am running on new hardware and more memory. Let me know if it feels faster Humbaba...
Well that pesky intestinal problem reared its ugly head this weekend and slowed me down a bit.
The Basement bathroom is progressing well if a bit slowly since I have been sick for a couple of days. Dad got the shower hardware in place last night and we need to make another trip to HD for some misc parts. We may get some wall board up today...
Later
Well I have always had a thing about working with electricity and it stems from my childhood.
When I was little my father was putting in a Darkroom in the basement of the townhouse. I was watching carefully while Dad was installing the light switches and electrical fixtures. well upon finishing all of the work dad went and turned on the circuit breakers and was greeted with a nice blue flash and a loud pop. The circuit breaker tripped and that was the end of the fireworks display but that was enough for me. I calmly told my dad that I was going upstairs now and headed for a safer spot in the house.
I also got whacked by 260 volts when I was in my teens my father and I went through an HVAC school and learned to repair AC and heat pump systems.
So between these two negative experience I have been very leery of anything that has to do with working with high voltage.
Well in all the work in getting a bathroom built in the basement my father and I found that we needed to get some electricity into the bathroom. There was already a significant amount of wiring run which had been exposed in the wiring boxes but when we purchased the house the basement was unfinished and the former owner had to cap all of the wiring boxes with blank faceplates. Well we have been tracing wires for the last two days and today we have started to hook up the switches and outlets that are already wired into the circuit panel. We finally got to the point where we needed to put new circuits into the existing distribution panel I volunteered to wire up the new breakers. Well Dad and I opened up the panel and wired in the new cables and got them all terminated and the breakers installed on the live panel. we also got all of the outlets and switches wired up and installed for the bathroom and the back room. the last wiring that we need to do is two additional outlets for the bathroom. One for the SaniPro and the other for the bathroom vanity. Since it is a bathroom we are using a Ground Fault Circuit outlet and running the other 2 outlets from that one so every outlet in the bathroom will be a GFC so water accidents will be no problem.
Needless to say after putting in all of the new circuits and wiring up all of the outlets and switches I flipped the breaker and there was no blue flash and no loud noises. So all was right with the wiring and the electricity god is happy.
Also installed a whole house filter for iron and sediment. I got the one with the clear filter cover so I could see the water. Ewww. Man there was a lot of crap in the water. At least now Liz will not complain about the nice pretty rust stains in the toilet any more.
Well more work tomorrow.
Well the first plumbing job is done. We have had a problem where our washer and basement sink drained into the sump. It is not supposed to be this way, but it was and now its not.
My father has a theory about plumbing for those who are not professional plumbers but from time to time get stuck running a wee bit O' pipe. His theory is that no plumbing job can be finished in less than three trips to the plumbing store. Heh, on our fourth trip back from Home Depot yesterday we finally had finished the laundry room.
We had a few fun moments while plumbing yesterday, the best two being that we forgot to put a cleaning trap at the end of our vertical run and had to cut off the elbow. Of course after cutting off the elbow we found that the pipe was now just a quarter of an inch too short, Oh yea of course we had forgotten the parts to make the cleaning trap on the first trip out to HD.
Well we get the Cleaning trap put on and the pump all hooked up and of course the pump cord is two inches to short to plug in the wall. Once we get the pump plugged in we give it a test run. Of course we find out that in our haste to assemble the last of the pipe we forgot to put the plug in the cleaning trap it was only a few cups of water on the floor but damn funny.
all in all it was a 6 hour day with 30 minutes of work spaced between each of the four trips to HD a good time was had by all.
On to the basement bathroom which has many a complication already.
