The best thing about doing a home improvement project is the excuse that it give you to get new toys err... Tools...
This project got me a nice Rotozip (thanks Dad), a tile saw, and (my favorite) a 360° laser level.
The project has progressed well. We finished grouting all the tile tonight. The floor looks really good now that it is finally finished. we did find that we have one clinker (tile that did not get fully seated and makes a hollow clink when you tap it) and that will probably need to be replaced. We have spare tiles and more of the grout that we used, so everything will match when we rip out the tile.
We got he drywall up and finished, we decided that we would go with a textured wall pattern instead of a plain flat wall. The reason was first the thin set that was accidently applied to the walls was not sanding well at all. The second is that it looks nice and took a lot less time to do the texture than it would have to get the walls perfectly smooth.
We picked up the rest of the supplies for finishing the bathroom today also. Owww my poor checking account... So all we have left to do is install the drop ceiling, Install the Sanivite, install the sink, make and install the vanity lights (we bought can lights and wood), spray the walls with paint, and hang the shower door. Ufff Daaaa....
Liz and my father will be working on the basement tomorrow as I have to go back to work. Work will feel good... a nice break from home improvement.
Well we have all the tile laid except for the top of the step going to the shower stall. Dad and I decided that we did not like the option of laying tile on the top of the step because the funny angle just did not look right once we dry laid the tile. Looks like Dad and I need to bring in some consultants... Liz and my mom to give it a bit of artistic flair that dad and I cannot do on our own, I need to have my wife's opinion on any artistic things that go in the bathroom.
We also got the shower stall walls installed and ready for the glass wall finishing touch which should only take us a few hours to get wrapped up.
The toilet should be a snap as we just need to place the sanivite pro and bolt down the toilet and connect the water outlet.
So all and all it is going smooth, to smooth something is going to go wrong soon...
Well my parents are in town for two weeks and we are working hard at finishing the basement bathroom.
We left the project with the electrical and plumbing finished. I had a lot of clean up to do since demolition is never neat. My father and I had to completely undue all the work that the previous owner did since nothing was done right. We had left one wall in the back with the drywall left on but after taking a critical eye to the back wall we found that the drywall was off 1/2 inch between two sheets and had to finish ripping down the back wall also. Well we got all the drywall up in less than 2 days which was nice since the plumbing took so much longer than expected.
We had our first issue when we mudded up the wall with the thinset for the tile (the pails of goop do look alike I promise...) other than that we have been setback free. We did not figure this out until we were looking at the walls and wondering why the mud was still wet. We did find out that the thinset makes fine drywall compound, if a bit difficult to sand.
Got the last of the tile laid on the floor and will start laying tile on the shower platform in the morning (Also Hardi-backer is not easy to score and snap despite what the website says).
We also got the screened door put up. It went much more smoothly than the last door and I am much happier with the fit and finish than the other door.
Getting the garage doors replaced on friday. We have been sitting on the money to put the doors up for a year but have had a very hard time getting time off to be at home when the doors were installed since I don't like leaving the garage unattended.
This will leave us with two big projects for the year. The steps that the pet safe salt dissolved (how pet safe is this salt if it will eat concrete?), and a decent shed. We have needed a shed for a few years now but since the addition of the snow-blower the need has become acute, since the addition of Liz's BMW we also have three cars in the garage again and space is now at a premium.
I guess we will prioritize those two after my parents leave and we see where we stand for home improvement cash...
Well when I was in the Great White North last week I evidently forgot to slam the car door. Yep you guessed it when I came home the battery was a door-knob. Got it started after charging it up and turned on the radio. Now you faithful readers will remember how I disconnected the battery when working on the car and had the little problem with the radio security code. Well this time it appears that we really did loose the radio code. After driving to work and back with no radio I decided that it was time to get a new head unit because who still uses cassette tapes anyway.
I am one of the horde of iPod users (had one since the 5 gig days) so the new head unit had to interface with the iPod as seamlessly as possible so that left just one choice for the manufacture of the radio. As I have always kind of preferred Alpine this just made my choice easier.
Alpine has made an interface that will Charge, Play, Control, and Display. It should be out at the end of this month. BMW will only charge and play songs it will not display what is being played at the time. though that is a nit it is a big nit in my opinion since BMW and Apple are co-marketing the iPod link to the BMW you figure that they would do a better job with the integration of the two. It does remain to be seen if the Alpine link lives up to the hype. I will post when I get the link and install it...
I will try to post more regularly since Alex is starting to make me look like an infrequent poster...
Oh yea the new head unit kicks ass (plus it has a remote for those of us who just can't be bothered to reach those agonizing 8 inches to the center console)...
it is an Alpine CDA-9831, would post a link but alpine is one of those websites that makes it difficult to post the link...
Well lets just see how they like the Gurkhas...
It seems that the people of Nepal are a bit teeved about the murder of their friends and family.
Sorry for the graphic image but people seem to keep forgetting what we are fighting againts.
When will the world learn that there is only one way to deal with these people...
Sigh...
