Fun Turns to Tragedy!!!

The Skinny

I am a gun enthusiast trapped in the People's Republic of Maryland. My political affiliation is Independent, as the Ruling parties are both full of crap, and long ago stopped representing the common man. If the Libertarians weren't such freaks I would probably be one. I am a member of the Nation of Riflemen and damn proud of it. I once took an oath that I would support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. As far as I know I never broke that oath, and will continue to follow it. I am not Politically Correct and will NEVER be Politically Correct. If you need to know more, feel free, Ask.

what am I up too???

Out on the range.
Well I went shooting with Major Mark this weekend. We had a blast. We started out on the 100 yard range (because there was a match going on at the 200 yard range). Mark had brought his Remington 700 in .300 Win Mag and I had brought my AR-15. My time at the range last trip out turned out to be well spent. A couple of minor adjustments and the AR was putting them through the X-ring most every trigger pull. I am currently firing cheap chinese ammo and it is performing fairly well but seems to have hard, deeply set primers which often do not fire, though by the end of the day I was having less misfires. I also had a couple of boxes of UMC which never failed to fire the first time (and were more accurate) so I am pretty sure that the Ammo is the source of my misfires not the AR. I got to fire Mark's cannon a few times throughout the day (feeding that beast is expensive and Mark had not brought a lot of ammo) It does seem to have a fair amount of recoil (you are definitely not going to be able to see where your shot hit through the scope...). The Zero seems to have been set for 250~300 yards as he last used it to hunt elk and the average shot on elk seems to be from 350 to 400 yards so it continually shot high. Holding it down on the edge of the 8 ring put the round just about dead center (it was kind of fun to watch the grin on Marks face when he started putting them in the X-ring). I can see where you could develop quite a flinch if you were shooting that beast with only a t-shirt for padding but with a fleece pullover and a jacket it was not bad (still memorable but not bad). I have discovered one thing though. The Scope that I am using which is a variable power scope 3X9 to be exact falls down for precision shooting once you leave the 100 yard mark. It still performs nicely but just does not have enough magnification for me. I have also been looking at a bolt action in .308 winchester and am currently leaning towards a Savage Arms 10FLP (yes the L stands for left hand). I have been hearing very good things about the Savage trigger and accuracy. If the rifle is capable of less than 1 MOA (which I have heard most are) at a 100 yards I think that that would be a better solution to discover if I have enough talent to shoot long distance without spending a boat load of cash. If it turns out I am capable of shooting the long range game then I can spend a bit to get a better stock and barrel than the factory issue.

Been Very busy
Yes posting has been a bit sparse in the neighborhood. Work was killing me all last week but this week things should be a lot lighter. There is nothing like working till 2AM then being woken up at 8AM to start work again to make you feel like not posting. Hopefully the silly crap is over for a while here at the site whose name will never be posted...

Turkey Killer…
Thats My wife. I am a member of the Ft. Meade Rod and Gun Club and we had our first Turkey Shoot today. Liz was kind of iffy about going to the shoot but I kept her informed and she acquiesced and decided to join me. She was a bit concerned on the way over that the club members would be a bunch of old fogies who would not be any fun. That opinion was quickly assuaged and she had a great time. Now for those of you who may not know what a turkey shoot is I will explain. The Turkey is in face a pice of paper with either an outline of a turkey with an X in the center of a target with a circle and X in the center. Each person gets one shot on the target on their lane each round. The person who is closest to the center of the X wins the round. Our shoot had 7 rounds with each round paying out a progressively larger amount of money. The last round pays out 10 dollars for each person registered (needless to say this is the round you want to win). I won the first round which was nice, Liz won the 5th round which was great but to top it off she won the final round. All told our winnings totaled 98 bucks. Not bad for the first event with only 7 people attending. We did not advertise this event outside of the club because if things went poorly on our first attempt at the turkey format we did not did not want to look like morons to the general public. Now comes the good part. Liz was so thrilled with the shotgun shooting that she decided that we were going to the Bass Pro Shop to pick up a shotgun of our own. Bonus... Here is Liz sporting our new shotgun... LizGun1.jpg Here is another view of the redneck cool camo job on the shotgun... LizGun2.jpg We actually had a choice of either blued metal or the camo job, Liz thought it was nicer looking in camo... I have owed some pics of the AR-15 for a while and have just gotten around to taking them so here they are. ARpic1.jpg and now with a model for a size perspective. LizAR.jpg Next project, Taking Liz to a High Power match. Who knows she may want an M14. wink

Santa Came Early!!!
Wow! is all I can say... I got a Christmas card from my friend Bob yesterday. Your standard Christmas card with the winter scene with the little Christmas lights hanging in the little houses windows, very nice. He personalized it with a nice note about getting together for a dip in the hot tub with Liz and I when it gets cold and starts snowing (which is the best part of a hot tub). He finished it up with a little PS. His gift to me this year was a two day Evasive Driving Course. Man talk about a premo present. I think that this one will not be topped for a while. I was hoping that Bob could get me a discount for taking the one day Advanced Driver Training course but was floored when Bob gifted me with the full blown evasive driving school. Bob is an instructor at Summit Point and has been teaching this and other driving courses for probably 4 years now. So I will be in good hands. I can't wait to go to this school as I am sure it will be a learning experience and a blast to go through the day two Evasive Driving Module with all the action that is entailed. Its good to have great friends, I am lucky to count Bob among them. Though I think that he is still cursing me for getting him out to the range that first time. I know he has amassed quite the firearms collection since that first fateful range day. You know that there will be a follow up post after I take the course with as many pictures as I can stuff into it. The only bummer is that I will have to wait till they have an open session which may be a while as the government agencies are keeping the school pretty busy. I can wait till the important work is finished as my class is just for the fun of it.

iPod Mobile
Well I have been an iPod fan from its inception and have always been happy with the units that I have had. My one point of contention has always been the road trip. I have had all of the various technologies for connecting the iPod to my car’s stereo. The cassette adaptor was pretty good it only made the music sound a little tinny it also only induced a little hiss. I could live with this most of the time and in fact did for many work related road trips before I decided to try a radio broadcast adaptor. I have tried 3 different types of broadcast adaptors and all of them were unmitigated failures. I was not happy with the sound quality or the tuning sensitivity on the ones I had used. I had long been looking for a solution that would give me a good quality sound and also give me good (or at least passable) navigation of the iPod’s music content. Well Alpine has finally come up with a product that has given me excellent sound quality as well as a fairly good navigation system. The Alpine KCA-420i is the iPod adaptor that works with all of the new Alpine head units with the Ai-Net interface. When Liz got her BMW I inherited her Acura Integra for a daily driver. Since it only had a factory stereo with a cassette head unit I decided to replace the head unit with an Alpine when we could not unlock the old head unit after I killedstress tested the battery for an extended period of time. Now they announced the product when I got the head unit but it had not shipped yet so I was taking the vaporware risk, but Alpine has been pretty good on its follow through for me in the past. Alpine said that the unit would ship in September but they missed the ship date by a month or so, which was not a big deal for me as I have had a short commute for a while now, but that will change sometime early next year. I was out looking at new televisions with my friend and we happened to go to a Tweeters and I went to the car audio portion of the shop and sure enough they had just gotten the KCA-420i in their last shipment. I left the store with the nice big blue Alpine box. The unit is only 2X3 inches with two very sturdy cable connectors. So the box was a bit of overkill on Alpines part. The install was a snap (literally as I broke the aftermarket mounting kit that was installed with the head unit a month previously, fortunately a new one only cost 17 dollars) with the Ai-Net cable routed from the back of the stereo to the glove box (for now) and connected to the adaptor. I then got creative and routed the iPod cable back to the little storage box below the head unit where I will make a custom mount for the iPod so it will be stealthy. It worked like a charm the first time and the learning curve for the head unit to iPod interface is pretty short so I had it up and playing in no time flat. I will have to do a post with some pics of my stealth install as well as the interface display in the very near future. I will be getting the aluminum stealth cover milled this Friday with any luck. All and all I am once again very satisfied with Alpine and their car audio equipment. The sound quality is excellent and the navigation system is fairly strait forward and the display of the song and artists name is quite nice. Well done Alpine.

Commenting in your comments…
I have noticed a trend lately of new bloggers reluctance to add a comment after someone else's comments in the comment section of their blog. I think that commenting on someone's comment to your blog will often spur further comments from others as well as foster a lively discussion from time to time. The whole Idea of having a comments component of your blog is to get others feedback, and discuss your entry. Sometimes it is good and sometimes you get your peepee wacked because you said something patently stupid. But it is never bad to respond to people in your comments. Especially if you want people to comment on your site again. If you never respond in your own comments to a comment someone that someone has put time and effort into giving you feedback on your post you may find that people loose interest in your writings. I particularly point this out to Ben over at ReasonableNut, and Kyle over at CerebralMisfire, not that I don't like getting your emails Ben, but if you want to foster more discussions on your blog don't hesitate to respond to well thought out comment from others in your comments. this entry seems to be comment rich...

Dead Goblin Alert.
My friend Big Enos was nice enough to point out this little article to me. A woman won't face charges after she shot and killed her husband, who had cut her telephone line and used a shovel to break open her door following weeks of domestic violence. Good for her. She did the world a favor. Too bad she had to endure the weeks of domestic violence before she shot him. Seems that the Goblin was up to no good whatsoever Gathings was pronounced dead at the scene with a single bullet wound to the chest. Gathings had cut Burgess' telephone line outside the house and parked his pickup truck about a mile away Here is where I get a bit pissed off though. Burgess had taken out a domestic violence protective order against Gathings after a series of abusive acts, including a break-in last month. The couple was due in court Thursday for a hearing. Records show Gathings had been jailed five times since July 22, including charges of assault by pointing a gun, assault on a female, domestic criminal trespass, and telephone harassment. What the hell was the judge thinking letting this dirt bag out of jail 5 times after his multiple offenses. The second arrest should have been a clue to the judge. The third arrest was the clue bat to the forehead and still the judge missed the signs that the man was a criminal and should have been locked up. This judge (or judges) should be removed from his position for incompetence and maybe jailed for criminal negligence. Just one more instance of a poor court system not doing the right thing. The fault that the woman had to use lethal force lies with our "criminal justice" system not the woman. It is a shame that we have to rely on the barrel of a gun for justice. I really loved the comment from the mother. "The restraining order was not worth the paper it was wrote on," said Angela Burgess People need to wake up realize that the police are only there to fill out the paperwork after the dust has settled. People who rely on a "restraining order" to protect themselves from a determined Goblin usually end up dead. Any one who thinks the cops are here to protect you is in for a rude awakening. This country is littered with examples of failed restraining orders, usually ending with the death of the person who filed the restraining order, I am glad this example of our "criminal justice" system had a very happy ending. You want protection? Buy a gun, learn how to use said gun, hit your target center of mass (preferably in the head), call the cops once you have ensured you and your family are safe, not before. That is the only protection that you can count on.

Owww…
Well Alex gave me a nice whack today for my little blurb on the article about the school in California banning the writings of our founding fathers (as well as the Declaration of Independence). It seems that the guy may be a religious nut bag who may have been handing out religious pamphlets which quoted the writings of the founding fathers (who were fairly religious men) included as book ends for religious nutbagisims. I have seen the first article refuted but without seeing some scans of the material he has been handing out it is hard to tell which side is right. Now the fact that the guys is being represented by a religious nutbag outfit (which timed the press release pretty well as everyone was going on thanksgiving vacation) may tip the scale in the schools favor, but then I think of all the nutbag things that the ACLU does and that scale tips right back to even. My favorite quote from Alex today was "Seriously, use occams razor on this. What's more likely: (1) school bans declaration of independence (2) teacher pushes personal religious agenda". Alex may well be right there, but the story originated in CA, and there have been some seriously whacked out things coming out of that part of the Country/State. I have seen some pretty silly lawsuits come out of CA and the 9th district courts so anything could happen. So if it was true I would not be surprised one bit. Time will tell but you can bet this will not show up in the MSM again either way.
