Fun Turns to Tragedy!!!
The Skinny
I am a gun enthusiast trapped in the People's Republic of Maryland. My political affiliation is Independent, as the Ruling parties are both full of crap, and long ago stopped representing the common man. If the Libertarians weren't such freaks I would probably be one. I am a member of the Nation of Riflemen and damn proud of it. I once took an oath that I would support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. As far as I know I never broke that oath, and will continue to follow it. I am not Politically Correct and will NEVER be Politically Correct. If you need to know more, feel free, Ask.

FUNK, LEONARD A., JR.
Rank and organization: First Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company C, 508th Parachute Infantry, 82d Airborne Division. Place and date: Holzheim, Belgium, 29 January 1945. Entered service at: Wilkinsburg, Pa. Birth: Braddock Township, Pa. G.O. No.: 75, 5 September 1945. Citation: He distinguished himself by gallant, intrepid actions against the enemy. After advancing 15 miles in a driving snowstorm, the American force prepared to attack through waist-deep drifts. The company executive officer became a casualty, and 1st Sgt. Funk immediately assumed his duties, forming headquarters soldiers into a combat unit for an assault in the face of direct artillery shelling and harassing fire from the right flank. Under his skillful and courageous leadership, this miscellaneous group and the 3d Platoon attacked 15 houses, cleared them, and took 30 prisoners without suffering a casualty.
I spend 3 hours in the basement with my rifle and my new Forester Co-Ax single stage press. I will put up some pictures tomorrow and go over the one problem that I had with the press (entirely my own fault and I have the broken decapping pin to prove it)
In reading the directions for the Forester Die, it gave a process for sizing the brass to your chamber by varying the seating depth of your die. Cool. I always cranked the die down until it met the case holder and called it good. So after adjusting the die, I now have just a tiny bit more resistance on the bolt when chambering a case than when the chamber is empty. (fortunately I had brass that had been fired from an M1A that would not allow the bolt to fully close with ease which made this whole process very easy).
Next up was to get an idea of the true Over All Length of the round. After a bit of trial and error I came up with a length of 2.872 inches as the starting point for the initial seating depth of the bullet (any further and the bullet would get stuck in the lands because of the amount of force necessary to close the bolt). Once I had closed the bolt and reopened it the round now measured from between 2.864 and 2.866 (with an average of 2.865 over 10 rounds) inches. I then zeroed the micrometer on the die and seated the round .015 inches further into the case for a final OAL of 2.850 inches. There was no perceivable increase of resistance when closing the bolt at 2.850 like there was at 2.872, and no land marks on the bullets so I am pretty sure that I am off the lands by at least .015 inches which should be a good starting point. Last year for boomershoot I seated to SAMMI OAL of 2.800 inches and you can see that I had a Jump of .065 inches which is WAY too much. But I have learned a lot about reloading for rifles in between now and then.
So now all I need to do is load up some rounds and do some testing. Hopefully I will see a small bit of improvement at the 100 and 200 yard marks (as that is all I have to shoot at on a static range with bulls eye targets. Last year I was pushing the 175grain SMK with 44 grains of varget and getting a MV of 2650 out of that combo and my 24 inch barrel. I will probably start at 43 grains and work my way back up to 44 grains. I was not happy with pushing it to 44.5 as my primers were getting a bit flatter than I like.
I hope that with a bit more consistency in my reloading tolerances and powder measurement I will be able to have more groups at .5 inches and a bit tighter with a bit of luck. With my best group being .4 inches at 100 yards and an average group size of .8 inches with the sloppy hand loads that I was making last year, I think that getting the average size group down to .5 should be doable with better quality loads.
All this so my performance will be better than last year, at this years Boomershoot. I don’t think that my performance was too bad last year but you would have to ask Ben, Gene, or Joe about that.
Now this should be Time’s Picture of the year…

“The picture shows that this soldier has been thru Survival School and learned his lessons well. He’s giving the sign of “coercion” with his left hand. These hand signs are taught in survival school to be used by POW’s as a method of posing messages back to our intelligence services who may view the photo or video. This guy was obviously being coerced into shaking hands with Hillary Clinton. It’s ironic how little she knew that he would so inform us about the photo—-perhaps because she’s never understood our military to begin with. No Democrat has.“
I repeat, Bottom Feeder…
Blatantly stolen from Mad Ogre, now go visit his site…
Oh yeah, someone give that soldier a raise, or at least another stripe…
From Snugg Harbor comes this gem, please go read the whole thing.
While the folks who genuinely seek make positive changes in what the government is allowed to do as a national entity, or to the population at large, grow increasingly frustrated. They see the Democrats as leaning more and more towards unabashed statist/socialist/we damn well know what is best for you (and the world)....just drink the kool-aide damnit! And the Republicans as caring only for keeping their seats….giving lip service to their original platform of small government…protecting the constitutional guarantees of the people…and seeing the unfettered HONEST expansion of capitalism/business.
In other words the Dems are morally bankrupt. The GOP is fast becoming fiscally corrupt…in bed with the almighty dollar….vice the vapid bimbo occupying the Dems berthing. They appear to be all of the same character (or lack there of) much like the lady referenced in the old George Bernard Shaw line…“Madam, we have already established what you are…we are now just dickering on price.“
This about wraps up my feelings one our government representation right now. Especially the “we are now just dickering on the price” part of it all.
Politicians all say during election time that “Talk is cheap”. Little did we know…
Which leads me to Abramoff.
I rode home a week or so ago on the MARC train from union station and the people next to me were from a lobbying firm. Seems their boss was in and making life hell in the office over the Abramoff thing. My response was only “a whole bunch of people are getting their just rewards”. As much as MSM wants to lay this all at the feet of the Repubs, it just is not going to go down that way. Yes the Repubs got more money but the Dems were into the pig pen up to their necks also. As much as I would like to think that this is an isolated event in our government, I know it is no such thing.
I have repeated this loudly and often. Our government is on the take, it is no longer about the people. It is about POWER and neither side is absolved in their thirst for it. Their attempts at shaping the country in the direction that they think it should go, regardless of whether or not they have the right to do so, is also all about POWER. The really need to take a look at the Constitution and try to use it as a guide (like that will ever happen), after all they did swear to uphold it.
They also need to try and live in the same world we live in. The gun grabbers in congress have concealed carry permits and a horde of armed body guards. They sally forth each day firm in the knowledge that if someone tries to do harm to them they will be protected. We on the other-hand, have to pray that there will be a cop nearby who is not writing out a speeding ticket, and will come and save us (once again, like that will ever happen). They also seem to have this nasty habit of showing up at airports with weapons in their carry on baggage, somehow they seem to get to their destination with only a little fuss. Anyone out there willing to try the same stunt next time they fly?? Bueller? Bueller? Anyone? I thought not…
They also are very well compensated for their 110 days in
session. WTF? Only 110 days and they make between 165,000 and 212,000 dollars. I repeat 110 days, where the hell do they think they are? France? I don’t know about you but from the 260 work days left after we subtract weekends, and the 10 or so federal holidays, that leaves roughly 250 work days that you and I have to work. If you minus the average of 3 weeks of vacation that we get a year that still leaves the average person 235 or so days of work. I would love to live in the fantasy land that they live in, they get and additional 125 days off that you and I have to work. Oh I forgot that they also get to vote themselves raises in good times and bad, I can’t recall in recent memory when that little ol thing failed to pass. I would go on and talk about their fully funded pension system, but I am about to heave now..
I don’t know about you all but I did not see a raise for 4~5 years after the tech bubble burst. One more instance of reality versus congressional fantasy land.
Out of Touch…
Out of Ideas…
Out to lunch (on us)...
How long do we have to keep re-electing the same bunch of bottom feeders before we realize they are not looking out for best interest of the average American. Or America for that matter.
“I believe that we lost critical time in dealing with Iran because the White House chose to downplay the threats and to outsource the negotiations,“ Ms. Clinton
So when we “go it alone” it is a problem. Now we try and have Europe help and it is lost time…
Bottom feeder…
It seems that S over at Pro-Gun Progressive has put his thoughts about the rift between the two grass roots Gun rights organizations in Maryland into a post. I covered my thoughts on the infighting here
Here is how it looks to me…
MPFO (Marylanders for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership) and J has drawn a line in the sand. They have built their trenches, set up their razor wire, and have said "This far, and no farther", for the most part J has done a good job if you count out the integrated trigger lock and the ballistic fingerprinting (which contrary to J were major losses in the war). The problem is that J is fighting trench warfare in the early 1900s, and for some reason seems to be content occasionally firing his bolt action rile over the fortifications every now and again. We are over the hump of the nasty 90s where banning firearms was all the rage. J the tank has been invented, it is nice to sit in your trench, but the war must be taken to the enemy even if you don’t think so.
MSI (Maryland Shall Issue) while they may be in the first generation of tanks, and still figuring out how to drive said tank, is at least taking the battle to the enemy. It is a small (but growing) group who is starting to get firmly established within the houses of power in Annapolis. J and the MPFO is ignoring them and poking fun at them as much as they can. But here is the kicker as Ken noted in the comment at Pro-Gun Progressive, a small group of outsiders often has more of a chance of forcing change than the large group of insiders which has not been able to make any progress in the last 20 years. The more I look at the holding action that MPFO is committing the more interested I become in MSI, and yes I will make it to the next On Target night if I am in town.
The
socialists nation wide have been given a very bloody beating over the 2nd amendment and their attempts to ignore what it means in the past few years. People are seeing the example that has been set in the UK and in Australia, and it isn’t pretty. Why should we leave our welfare to a system that can’t/won’t do anything to protect us.
The only one looking out for your interest in the world is YOU. The collective has no interest in keeping you safe. They are just interested in staying in power. That being said I am still of the opinion that I held last year for Mr. Quinter.
Oh, S If you used a method of commenting that did not require me to login I would be commenting on your site. Look into Captchas please… K
Well it is time to start getting ready for boomershoot 2006. I am definitely attending, my entry was sent off to Joe and Gene in december but I had some decisions to make on just what I was going to take with me this year. Barney is of course going to make the trip. I had hopped to re-barrel Barney with something a bit longer and more accurate but time is running short and there are really no local gunsmiths (that I have been able to find) that would be able to get me a barrel, get it fitted, and still leave me time to work up a load for the event. I will probably go with the same load as last year. I may have the .300 Win Mag put together by that time but I am not sure as I still don’t have a stock.
I decided to get a single stage press so that I can make my loads even more accurate than last year (I have had issues with getting the varget to drop from the dillon powder measure with any great consistency) so I will also probably get a Pact powder measure system to go along with it. I may tinker with a palma load but with a 1 in 10 twist barrel, I am not real sure that it will stabilize the light bullet very well but testing is cheap enough… I will start loading up shortly after I get my brass back from Ben (yes he has had it since last boomershoot), as it will take me a bit longer this time since I will be loading on a single stage press. I will put up some pictures once I have the new Forester Co-Ax mounted on the bench…
VEALE, MOSES
Rank and organization: Captain, Company F, 109th Pennsylvania Infantry. Place and date: At Wauhatchie, Tenn., 28 October 1863. Entered service at: Philadelphia, Pa. Born. 9 November 1832, Bridgeton, N.J. Date of issue: 17 January 1894. Citation: Gallantry in action manifesting throughout the engagement coolness, zeal, judgment, and courage. His horse was shot from under him and he was hit by 4 enemy bullets.
Well it seems that there are two more Maryland gun bloggers that I need to add to the rolls.
First up The Gunn Nutt wins an instant addition to the blog roll as
this post was among the first ones that I saw on his main page and it does a body good. Nothing like catching lying commie ass hats on video. Ok there is one thing better, showing said video to the cops when the lying commie asses don’t fess up with the truth.
Next up is Pro-Gun Progressive. I have had him in my bookmarks for a time while I decided if he was for real or just pretending to be pro gun (I decided fairly quickly he is for real). So now I will put him up on my blog roll also he is a very outspoken person on the subject of gun rights in maryland. One day I will hopefully get to meet him IRL.
Well the season where the PRoMD trys to make new laws has officially started. there are already 3 bills in the House dealing with guns.
HB 12 - Scrapping the silly gun case fingerprinting
sham. About time this pet of the Brady bunch is taken out back and shot. Millions down the drain on a technology that does not work… Maybe we can ask the Canadians how to run the “Ballistic Finger Printing” program. I hear they are real efficient, and their program is 100 percent effective.
HB 14 - Scrapping the integral lock requirements on the sale of handguns. I would love to see this one go, but you know the GFWs will fight for this tooth and nail as “It is for the children”.
SB 24 - I have to call this one as I see it. Stupid is as stupid does… Making the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime(even a non functional one) a misdemeanor.
If you are going to punish criminals using a firearm in the commission of a crime, do it right throw the book at them… Misdemeanor… Sheez, get serious or cut it out…
Oh yea, one last thing. The
socialists in control of the state Senate have overridden the governors veto of the bill that will require “companies with more than 10,000 employees to spend at least 8 percent of their payroll on health benefits, or pay the balance into a state low-income health insurance fund.“ Now this was aimed particularly at Wal Mart. I would like nothing more than for Wal Mart to draw its payroll down to 9,999 people in Maryland and tell the Socialists to get stuffed. Much like when the Socialists also put a little tax on the HMO providers in maryland last year. Well the HMO providers passed that tax on to their subscribers and the Socialists cried fowl…
I keep asking myself if they are really this stupid… Unfortunately, for the average citizen in maryland the answer keeps coming up as a resounding YES. Go ahead and make our state an unfriendly place to do business. Lets just see what the free market economy will do, lets see if companies want to invest in a place where they are told how they are allowed to run their company.
Ok everyone (all 3 of you) please go hit this link and vote in the poll on the lower right hand side.
It is a poll about concealed carry in Maryland.
Update: Never mind they changed the poll….
Well on my commute home friday afternoon I called my wife to say hi, and let her know that I was on my way home. About halfway through the conversation one of her coworkers came into her office and asked if she was talking to me. Her coworker was then put on the phone, she asked me if she should take her 5 year old dell to get it fixed or just buy a new computer. I then asked her what was wrong with her old computer? Her response was that the IP address went away. She also stated that she had a friend over to help her try and fix the problem computer and that there was a dll missing. I then asked her if her computer has been slow lately, and her immediate response was yes. I then asked her what kind of router she had between the cable modem and her computer. That is when she dropped the bomb on me.
“What Router? I just plugged my Dell into the cable modem.“
I wanted to then scream into the cell phone “For all that is good and holy in the world, NOOOOOO”. Instead I calmly asked her if she was sure? She sated, “Well I only have the little box that I rent from comcast”. I replied, “Ummm, Crap”. I wanted to reply that you are FUBAR but that was just not the right thing to say.
Now there are worse things that you can do to a windows machine besides putting it directly onto the internet. Shooting the hard drive with the nearest handy .340 Weatherby Magnum is the only one that I can think of right now, I am sure that there may be another thing worse than that but nothing is coming to mind.
So now comes the real fun as she wants to save her pictures from the hard drive. Now personally I would not touch that old hard drive without a class III biohazard suit and long tongs, as who knows what malicious crap in on there after 4 ~ 5 unprotected years on the net… I might hook the HD up to a mac and have her just pick out what she wants as the mac should have no real issues with the infected PC HD…
I am so glad I stopped using the crap that comes from Bill long ago. I just wish that more of the unwashed out there would read about the threats that exist, and take at least minimal precautions when hooking the Mess that Bill Made to the internet…
If I get in trouble, I blame it all on Cowboy Blob…

*SHOUP, CURTIS F
Rank and organization: Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company I, 346th Infantry, 87th Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Tillet, Belgium, 7 January 1945. Entered service at: Buffalo, N.Y. Birth: Napenoch, N.Y. G.0. No.: 60, 25 July 1945. Citation: On 7 January 1945, near Tillet, Belgium, his company attacked German troops on rising ground. Intense hostile machinegun fire pinned down and threatened to annihilate the American unit in an exposed position where frozen ground made it impossible to dig in for protection. Heavy mortar and artillery fire from enemy batteries was added to the storm of destruction falling on the Americans. Realizing that the machinegun must be silenced at all costs, S/Sgt. Shoup, armed with an automatic rifle, crawled to within 75 yards of the enemy emplacement. He found that his fire was ineffective from this position, and completely disregarding his own safety, stood up and grimly strode ahead into the murderous stream of bullets, firing his low-held weapon as he went. He was hit several times and finally was knocked to the ground. But he struggled to his feet and staggered forward until close enough to hurl a grenade, wiping out the enemy machinegun nest with his dying action. By his heroism, fearless determination, and supreme sacrifice, S/Sgt. Shoup eliminated a hostile weapon which threatened to destroy his company and turned a desperate situation into victory.
