Fun Turns to Tragedy!!!

The Skinny

I am a gun enthusiast trapped in the People's Republic of Maryland. My political affiliation is Independent, as the Ruling parties are both full of crap, and long ago stopped representing the common man. If the Libertarians weren't such freaks I would probably be one. I am a member of the Nation of Riflemen and damn proud of it. I once took an oath that I would support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. As far as I know I never broke that oath, and will continue to follow it. I am not Politically Correct and will NEVER be Politically Correct. If you need to know more, feel free, Ask.

what am I up too???

Answers by Paul

My father has this interesting quirk, brought on by years of being told that he “must know the answer” to questions even though he had little experience in the subject matter that spawned the question.  As a defense mechanism he started making up answers to these questions that he “must know the answer” as the defense of saying “I don’t know” was rarely accepted as a plausible answer to the question.  His answers usually sounded a lot like the explanation that this guy gives for Electricity.

As he really got into his form during my latter teens and early 20s, his “answers” got to the point that they sounded really plausible.  After having my sister get caught out parroting one of his answers, after then being taken to task by her, he started prefacing his answers with the word “well”.  This worked out pretty well for a long time,  just recently he has gone back to leaving off the word well in his explanations again, which I find to be a hoot as now people don’t really know if is telling a big whopper or if he is being serious.  Makes for some pretty entertaining looks from the person who has just gotten an answer (given with a very strait face) that they don’t think is right…

Here is to my Dad who can answer any question…

Hat tip to Mostly Cajun for pointing out this gem…

Why bother helping…

So I am coming back from getting my passport renewed, I may be traveling a bit in the very near future and having a current passport helps with that a bit.  As I am driving home I am smelling something that smells like burning electronics.  I quickly scan all my gauges and look in my rear view mirror.  Nothing seems awry in my car so I open up the windows.  If the smell goes away it is probably my problem, if it gets worse it is probably someone in front of me.  After opening my window the smell increases exponentially.  So it is defiantly some one in front of me.

As I catch up to the cars in front of me I see a Ford Taurus two cars in front of me putting off a bit of smoke.  At the next light after the Ford has stopped I see smoke coming out of the back wheels.  I am turning at this light so I am able to pull up next to the woman driving the Ford.  I roll down my window and point to her rear tires and tell her that she has her parking bake on and her car is smoking.  She promptly flips me the bird.  The light has turned green at this point and she pulls off after flipping me the bird.  With the back end of her car smoking…  I really hope it caught on fire…

What is it with some people today.  This is the second time that I have tried to point out a problem with a car and have been flipped the bird in the last 6 months.  I guess that they just don’t think that people are trying to be helpful in today’s society.

I really need to get out of this shitty part of America where people just rude, obnoxious, and true to the stereotype.  I just hope that things are not as bad outside of the socialist portions of America.

My very own Boomershoot nightmare.

Well Joe has often spoken about the nightmares that he gets in preparation for Boomershoot.  Well last night I was having one of my own.

Somehow I forgot to ship my ammo to Joe before the event.  I am calling Joe at 6 AM on friday morning frantically asking him where I can get some Federal Match ammo in 308 winchester.  Now the first day of the precision rifle class is today so there is not time to be wasted.  Needless to say the event is located in rural Idaho and there is no match ammo to be had.  He has me drive all the way to Spokane Washington and they are sold out so after making it to Spokane in under an hour from Orofino, I find out that the only other place that has any is in Montana.  Gahhh…

I guess this is just my brain’s way of telling me to get my brass back from Ben.

Ammo Day and then Some

Well Ammo Day 2006 has come and gone.  I did my part this year and have the pictures to prove it…

image

Now this year Ammo Day is kind of different here at the encampment.  We had a soft on crime, hard on lawful fire arms ownership type of governor elected, as well as the loss of a few key pro-gun local politicians.  So I decided that it was time to get ahead of the gun-ban curve.  There was a bright side to the losses as our favorite Hoplophobe and AWB author lost his reelection.  So I will be looking intently at the gun bigot bills that will be fed into the legislative hopper in early february.  Looks like I will also have to find time to make a couple of trips to the state house when the bill hearings get announced.  If it is like last year they will announce the hearing schedule very late in order to make it harder for the pro second amendment people to get to Annapolis.  So here is another one of my new acquisition.

image

I have put 200 rounds through the Charles Daly High Power and am really liking the weapon.  It is almost a perfect point and shooter for me.  I was kind of worried about the XS Sight Systems fast-acquisition sight system.  Though after using it I was pleasantly surprised at just how fast I was able to acquire the target and also how fast I was able to put the follow up shot down range.

As a bonus you have to love a manufacturer that knows how to advertise with a bit of subtlety.

I also had the chance to have a model give a good display of proper trigger control.

Boomershoot 2007

Well last year before boomershoot I bought a new car and got it prepped for B Stock Autocross.  That took up a lot of my time and all of my spare change.  This year I just have to put in gas and new tires from time to time.  I will be going to do the Pro Solo series so I will be traveling a bit, but that is for another post…

So I already have gotten my hotel, rental car, and flight taken care of.  All and all the trip will probably only run me $700 total.  $500 for the car and hotel and an additional $200 or so for food and drinks.  Delta will graciously be transporting me from Maryland to Idaho and back, thanks to my frequent flyer miles.

Right now I have about 100 rounds loaded for boomershoot.  I am going to be taking barney as my main rifle and possibly my 6.5mm Swedish Mauser just for shits and giggles as well as for a bit of boomer hunting.  If Joe thinks a 9mm will set off boomers I will bring that also.  I have to get 175 grain Sierra Match Kings and probably more brass as my friend Ben still has my Lapua brass (as well as 200 rounds of black hills match) from the last boomershoot.

I put the check in the mail for Gene Econ’s precision rifle class on Thursday, and was the last one accepted before he started the waiting list, so everything is on track for Boomershoot 2007.

I can’t wait for the end of april…

National Ammo Day is rapidly approching

image

Yes ladies and gentlemen it is that time of year again.  I plan on going out and getting lots of ammo.  I have also purchased a gun in the dreaded Euro Pellet caliber.  For two reasons.  One is that it is cheap to shoot factory loads.  Number two is that I have always wanted a Browning High Power variant.  I chose a Charles Daly HP.  The fit and finish was very nice, the only down side is the modern “safty” mechanisms cause the trigger to be gritty and also you cannot dry fire the weapon without a mag inserted.

Now as it had been a while since I last purchased a handgun in the People’s Republic of Maryland I was in for a rude shock when I went to fill out the paperwork for my new pistol, but that is for another post…

Needless to say I am soooo out of this state in a couple of years, and I will be taking my tax dollars to a state where the socialists are not in charge…

Laugh of the day…

Today’s laugh of the day was brought to me by Jim Webb…

“We have a much stronger Democratic party…We’re going to work hard to bring a sense of responsibility in our foreign policy that will, in my view, result in a diplomatic solution in Iraq,“

Um here is a clue for you Jim.  The terrorists want to wipe us from the face of the map, they could care less about a “diplomatic solution”.  So once they Nuke Israel, you can bet they will be turning their attention to us.  Then again maybe they will hit us with their “diplomatic solution” first, because something leads me to believe that the Israelis will not hesitate to retaliate with the appropriate level of force.  Needless to say the Israelis will not be really worried about a coalition, because unlike some of us, they really do understand what is at stake.

I can see the next few years being quite comedic (probably in a not so funny way).  But looking on the bright side we can now blame the Democrats for all the problems.  Just like in the bad old Clinton days.

Gun P0RN…

Well people it is time for some good old fashion Gun P0RN.  I finally got myself some studio strobes.  I had been wanting them for a long time as taking good photographs of large objects indoors requires decent lighting, either natural or artificial.  So last night I got the strobes all set up along with a white background, and started shooting.  The first thing that I found is that it is difficult to get the Guns to stand up so that you don’ t just have a rifle laying down flat on its side and looking oh so un-photogenic.  I tried several things but finally decided that putting a cartridge box under the middle of the rifle worked for the evenings photo session.  So here are the results with my new Swedish Mauser.

image

Yes I know I have some hot spots near the muzzle, I will try and correct that kind of stuff next time around as I am just getting started with studio lighting.  My photographs should get better with some time and practice.

image

So what do you think?  Bolt open or bolt closed.  I found that with this particular rifle that I had to do even more propping up of the rifle as even on the cartridge boxes it wanted to lay flat.  I found that a wine cork was just about the right size and was of a material that was grippy when placed on the wood of the stock and the cardboard of the cartridge boxes.  Let me know what you all thought of the pictures.  Next up was my winter project.

I have been working on getting this together for a while now.  The Autocross season and a new car intruded a bit on this year’s time allotment.  It is finally time to get back to work on the rifle.

image

I purchased this barreled action from Charles Daly last year just before they announced that they were discontinuing the Mauser action.  I was glad that I ordered it when I did as now they are hard to find.  I wanted to get it in a sufficient caliber for hunting big game out west.  I think that this caliber will suffice…

image

I ordered the stock from Richards Microfit Gunstocks.  I ordered an oddball stock so it took a while to get in as I wanted a left hand stock with a right hand action.  I could have gotten the Daly action in left handed but they only had it in stainless steel and I wanted a blued version.  I will eventually get two stocks for this rifle as I want one for presentation eventually, a nice figured walnut.  The stock took about 3 months to come in and it looks pretty good.  Now I just have to go out and get the tools to finish off the final fitting of the stock.  Then it will be sanding and bedding the action before I put the finish on the stock.

So what do you all think of my first photographs using Studio lighting?

Some days it just does not pay to get out of bed…

Now that the new shed is up it is time to get it painted.  As the new shed is pretty big I figured I would spray the whole thing. Well I got out the Wagner Power Painter that I had used once on a basement painting project.  I loaded it up with paint, plugged it in, expected to see the bright white paint spray out of the sprayer.  When I pulled the trigger there was nada, zip, nothing.  Maybe I put it together wrong.  Thirty minutes later I had a mess on my hands but I had correctly assembled the wee beastie.  Refilled it with paint, plugged it in, pulled the trigger.  Nothing… It makes a lot of noise but no white goodness comes out of the tip.  Off to the internet for the manual.

Wagner’s web page is a class one disaster.  The tech support basically isn’t.  The cool toll free number of course does not work on the weekends when everyone is doing these projects.  Pure genius on Wagner’s part that one, no tech support on weekends when the CONSUMER products are most likely to be used.  So here is where I get terminally stupid, I go out and buy another Wagner product.  I figure that I should go a step up and get a more industrial product.  So I got a Wagner Paint Crew system.

It looks pretty cool, but within the first half gallon it sprung a leak at the hose coupler.  That is when I found out what a stupid design it was.  The paint tray resides on top of the motor of this particular machine, you use water to clean out the latex paint.  Did I mention that the paint tray is not detachable and it is mounted on top of the motor?  Well once I had managed to cover the whole machine in paint while emptying the tray and fixing the leak I was ready to start painting again.  Filled it with paint and plugged it in.  After priming the whole system I get ready to start painting again.  Only this time the painter motor does not shut off or generate enough pressure to produce a proper paint pattern.  Crap…  Well after reading the manual, It says that the filter or paint tip is clogged, or worse the valve system is damaged.  Well with my luck it could only be one thing.  So after I had cleaned out the filter, paint tray, paint machine, paint tip and all the other crap that gets paint on it when you try to clean the paint tray I was ready to give it another shot.  Filled it with paint, plugged it in, primed it, pulled the trigger and nada…  Still will not produce a proper paint pattern.  Sigh.  So I clean it up again.  Now by this time I really hate this machine and having to clean the entire thing three times in an afternoon did not improve my mood in the least.  Off to the internet for some more research.

Once I spent a while poking around the Wagner site, which by the way is worthless.  I finally get fed up and looking for general tips out on the web.  I don’t find any, but I did find the consumer reviews on the product.  There were many stories just like mine, essentially I had just blown more money on a crap product and I just don’t want to go into the horror stories I saw on the web.

Now I really need to get this shed painted, winter is coming after all and bare wood just does not hold up to moisture and freezing all that well.  So I am fed up at this point and just go out and get a Graco Magnum DX.  Yea it was more than I wanted to pay but there was no way I was going to look at another Wagner product.  Got it home, put it together, finished priming the shed, and cleaned it.  By the way to clean the Graco you just need to attach the garden hose, yep that simple.  So once I finished cleaning it up I got the final paint all loaded up and finished the job.  You get what you pay for most of the time.

The moral of this story ist to buy the best tools you can, and by and large they will not fail you.  So you can spend the big chunk of change once, or you can spend the same amount, spread over a couple of crappy products that kind of work before you buy the tool you should have gotten in the first place.  Here is the big rub.  You will never get back the time you wasted trying to get the crappy products to do the job right. Time is money after all.

You Are a “Don’t Tread On Me” Libertarian
You distrust the government, are fiercely independent, and don’t belong in either party.
Religion and politics should never mix, in your opinion… and you feel opressed by both.
You don’t want the government to cramp your self made style. Or anyone else’s for that matter.
