Fun Turns to Tragedy!!!
The Skinny
I am a gun enthusiast trapped in the People's Republic of Maryland. My political affiliation is Independent, as the Ruling parties are both full of crap, and long ago stopped representing the common man. If the Libertarians weren't such freaks I would probably be one. I am a member of the Nation of Riflemen and damn proud of it. I once took an oath that I would support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. As far as I know I never broke that oath, and will continue to follow it. I am not Politically Correct and will NEVER be Politically Correct. If you need to know more, feel free, Ask.

Here is my rude intro to the Rebate industry…
I bought a spendy bit of kit from Canon, The rebate made it an expensive purchase but without the rebate I would not have done it at this time. I had two reasons for getting a new camera at this time. First is that after the last vacation to AZ I found the crop factor of the smaller than full frame cameras to be a major issue when shooting landscape in tight quarters as well as big scenes. Second is that Liz has finally outgrown the original Canon D30 that I got 4 years ago. So it was time to let liz have my D20 and get a new 5D. So when the Canon fall rebates rolled out I went out and got a new camera. Little did I know how big of a hassle getting the rebate was going to turn out to be…
Ok. I went out and bought a 5D and a 24-70L the first day the rebate was offered… I promptly registered online and sent everything in (and forgot to make a copy of the UPC). I then got an email back from the rebate center with the confirmation that I had applied for my rebate.
I waited a month after I had received the confirmation of delivery (yes I did send it certified with delivery confirmation) from the postal service. I then called Canon. I was give the number from the canon call center rep to call the rebate center (
young america).
I called the rebate center and obviously got a call center agent (all the background noise gives that away). The call center agent then “Looks up” my information. I did mention to him that I did not make a copy of my UPC, as I am an honest person and he asked. He tells me that there is no record that I applied for the rebate online. We even both went to the online rebate site where we then enter in my information (I did it from my machine at home) I was able to bring it up with no problem, he stated that he was not getting any information. We go through this a couple of times with him “trying other things” and finally he asked me to wait while he checked another thing and hung up on me. 14 min and 4 seconds that I am never going to get back.
I then called the rebate center back, got another different person this time. Go through the story about the last guy (probably his cube mate) not being able to find any information. This time the guy tells me that he found some information but the address is in TX not MD. We go round and round for a while and he finally finds a way to get off the phone with me, essentially telling me that there is nothing he can do. Only lost 7 min and 14 seconds of my life this time around.
Now after being blatantly lied to and spending the last half an hour listening to their best monkeyshine, I was needless to say a bit peeved…
So my next call was to Canon directly, no more Young America. I decided that this was a Canon issue, they were the only ones that were going to be able to fix the problem that they created by contracting with a shady organization.
I called Canon and got a nice lady on the phone and vented. I told her that I did not appreciate being lied to and explained what had happened. We then went to the rebate site and punched in my information. Low and behold she saw my information (on the first try no less). I then asked her how Canon could justify putting their loyal customers who have spent thousands and thousands of dollars with Canon over the last couple of years through this kind of mess. She agreed with me and gave me the complaint email address for Canon. She then said that they would take care of it. 11 min and 50 seconds later I felt a lot better.
Four days or so later I got a call from Canon and they left a message for me asking them to call them back. I called them back and got in touch with them right away. After we pulled up my info on the web site and confirmed that we both could see that it was indeed listed as it should have been she asked me to fax or email in a copy of my receipt as well as copies of my warranty cards (which I had no mailed in) and photographs of my cut out product boxes. I emailed her the scanned receipt, warranty cards and jpegs of the boxes. I called back and we verified all the information was correct and complete, she said that she would take care of it.
This was on the 9th of January. I checked the rebate website today and there is another entry with a date received of the 17th and a check in the mail on the 19th.
The entry method on my submission was “Entry Method: Web-Rebate”
The entry method on the new submission was “Entry Method: C/S Submission”
So it looks like the check is in the mail…
The moral of the story is only call young america once, as it will save you a precious 7 min and 14 seconds…
Now this has to be the coolest thing that I have seen all year.
All I can say is wow. I do wonder how he got the wings to be in the folded out and locked position while in flight… Definitely Incredible.
The AnalogKid over at Random Nuclear Strikes turned me on to this band one one of his SoundBoard Postings… It is definitely my favorite album of the year. Possibly my Wife’s favorite also.
I am going to do him one better (or worse possibly)
So here it is… My version of the SoundBoard…
Pendulum (Track one and two from the Hold Your Colour album)
This video may cause you to spray liquids from your nose so please make sure you are drink free after the first minute… Oh, and it is work safe.
